Where Did We Go?
Liberty Kitchen & Oysterette
4224 San Felipe St., Houston, TX 77027
What's the Skinny?
Liberty Kitchen & Oysterette is like an upscale lounge equipped with various rooms, uncompromising spaces, and a ton of character. Designed by Carl Eaves and Lee Ellis, the space gives off a completely different vibe than its sister restaurant, Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar. Lively, full of energy, and a place for any crowd, Liberty Kitchen & Oysterette is a one stop shop for all things seafood.
Want to cozy up in a uniquely decorated booth representing the various areas on Houston? You got it. Or how about taking a seat at the centrally located bar where you can pick a side? Opt for the side with the cocktails or go for the seafood and oyster "seabar" on the other. Truth be told, any seat in the house is great. We loved the modern feel of the space and reveled in the creativity of the design. It seemed as though our moods shifted, along with the changes in color from cream to soft blues and greens, as we passed each corner. We are still in awe.
Some of the menu items can be found at both restaurants, but many were specifically created for Liberty Kitchen & Oysterette. At the Seabar you can order Raw Oysters, chilled Jumbo Shrimp or Maine Lobster (cocktail style, if you prefer), Smoked Salmon, Tuna Tartare, steamed Clams and Mussels, or even Ceviche. Of course you should expect the usual suspects to be there like the Bacon Basted Rainbow Trout, Sea Scallop & Pork Belly Kebabs, Bering Sea King Crab Legs, Po-Boys, and Fried Shrimp. And although seafood-centric, you can find burgers, steaks, and pasta on on the menu as well. They even offer caviar, just to round out the offering.
What Did We Love?
With Executive Chef Travis Lenig in the kitchen, just about anything on the menu will be worth your while, but here are a few of our favorites:
Deviled Eggs & Fried Oysters - "I'll take plain boring ass deviled-eggs when eating at Liberty Kitchen," said NO ONE ever! These guys are making deviled-eggs sexy again with their deviled eggs & fried oysters. And just for the yum of it add mapley bacon and smoked paprika.
40-Oz. to Freedom Gumbo - This baby is packed to the brim, literally, with brisket, smoked chicken, andouille, maine lobster, jumbo shrimp, oysters, fried oysters, jumbo lump crab, blackened redfish, creole potato salad, and fried okra! There is really not much to say about this one...the ingredients speak for themselves. Made with a dark roux, this gumbo is made to share. Be our guest and try to go for it solo, but you've been warned. All the meats are tender and are further seasoned as they bask in the Cajun concoction. This is one of the most flavorful bowls of gumbo we have come across in Houston. Just come hungry.
Charred Chilies con Queso - Just save the tortilla chips for the kiddos because you are going to want to take this in by the spoonfuls! We upgraded our queso and added griddled shrimp and crabmeat. We are not sure which was better...the cheese or the seafood. Two words - home run.
Urban Swank did receive a complimentary tasting, but the opinions expressed are our own.
