Recently, we visited the new Adair Kitchen in the Galleria area, when they hosted a media dinner. We had plans to visit them for dinner weeks earlier, but they postponed their opening by 2 weeks to ensure the kitchen was on point and up to their standards.
The siblings, Katie Adair Barnhart and Nick Adair, created this restaurant because they wanted a neighborhood place that served the kind of good food they loved and got from their mothers kitchen growing up - fresh and delicious comfort food. They also got inspiration from their mom when deciding on the Adair Kitchen logo/mascot. It's a pig; in honor of their mothers’ fascination with the creatures. I felt it only fitting that I follow suit; and honor the fat guy too. So, I will talk about the experience at Adair's in pig Latin. Oh, you all don't speak Pig Latin?!?! I think that is one better spoken and not written anyways! Then, I'll go with the kids classic nursery rhythm, "This Little Piggy"…
This little piggy went to the market: It's so cliché to say that owning and operating a restaurant was in their blood, since their parents are restaurateurs Gary and Betsy Adair - owners of Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill and Los Tios Mexican Restaurant. Well, sue me because I am saying it! They are now open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During lunch service the line is out the door...what a great problem to have especially since they are new; and the previous 3 occupants of this space could not find that kind of magic on a good day. The breakfast menu includes classics like: Breakfast Tacos, Crispy Chicken & Waffles and Huevos Rancheros. For lunch and dinner they turn things up a bit with selections ranging from: Pimento Cheese Sandwiches (YUMMY), Custom Salads to Apple Chutney Bone In Pork Chop, and Pecan Crusted Chicken. Executive chef Jimmy Mitchell has created a fresh, seasonal dinner menu that compliments the breakfast and lunch menus created by Katie and Nick.
This little piggy stayed home: No way! It was my first dinner out after being in the hospital almost a week, and being on a liquid diet. This is how ready and excited I was...I arrived about 30 minutes before anyone else because I was so excited. However, I played it off as if my arrival was meant to take pictures (please note - greedy does not look cute on anyone). Since it was a media preview, we dined with several other media folks. Katie and Nick were our hosts for the evening, and as an added bonus, their parents were also in the building. Since our group was pretty small, we decided to order several appetizers, salads, and dessert dishes to share, so we could all get to taste multiple selections. Spoiler Alert: for dessert I went rogue and opted for my own piece of Key Lime Pie. I figured it would be better this way. How tragic would it have been to hear about me stabbing someone with a fork over a piece of pie (not a good look)!
This little piggy had roast beef: We started the night with the Ceviche (shrimp and bay scallops), Kitchen Cheese Board (daily cheese, prosciutto, and honey), andFried Asparagus. My favorite was the asparagus. It was served with their house-made sun-dried tomato ketchup - yes it tastes as good as it sounds. They had a nice crunch and even though they were fried, they reminded me of a light healthy snack. Next we ordered a few salads: Kale + Quinoa (shredded kale, quinoa, feta, cranberries, almonds, olive oil and lemon) and Shrimp + Goat Cheese (spinach, grilled shrimp, roasted bell pepper, goat cheese, pumpkin seeds, purple onion and balsamic vinaigrette). The bitterness of the Kale with the sweetness of the cranberries makes this salad extra special. For entrees it seemed we all went with something different. Urban Girl and I selected Pecan Crusted Chicken (UG) and I did a half-order of Green Enchiladas and a half-order of Chipotle Steak Tacos. Honestly, I disregarded that decision after my entrée came; the enchiladas were so delicious I wanted a whole order! They were seasoned well and had a wonderful flavor, especially when I mixed in the cilantro rice. The tacos on the other hand, were not so good. I hate, hate, and hate thirsty tacos (translation: the meat was dry)! So this is not something that I would likely order again. Next, I had the opportunity to have several bites of Urban Girls chicken and it was pretty good. I tend to like a little more seasoning; that is a personal preference and not a deal breaker. It is served with shaved brussel sprouts and risotto which are good complementary sides for this entrée.
This little piggy had none: Nope! However, it is dessert time so let me dive right in to our evenings selections - there was Chocolate Pudding Cake, Key Lime Pie (with real key limes), Espresso Brownie Tart, Chocolate Walnut Tart, and Coconut Walnut Tart. All of these were brought to the table, but as I said earlier for me it was all about the key lime. All I could say after my first few bites was OMG, OMG. Chef put his foot into this pie (for those that have never heard this expression, it’s a good thing).
After a great evening of good food with friends and colleagues, I was left smiling and fat-fat full. All that was left for me to do...is WEE WEE all the way home!
