Boheme Cafe and Wine Bar - A New City, A New Safe Haven

Alright, so I have a couple of rules when moving to a new city. It's actually more like a grocery list of things that I check off while making a city "home". I tend to go back and forth on the order in which I check these items off but the MOST important item on the list is this: finding a "Safe Haven" (equivalent to your guilty pleasure for the week). It's a place where you can go grab a beer, a coffee, some food, or just good conversation. Somewhere you can walk into and not feel guilty or embarrassed that you are alone; this place empowers you. I found mine after only three days of being in Houston, hallelujah! I remember walking up and knowing that I was in for something great...Boheme Café and Wine Bar.

Entering Boheme you may wonder for a second if you are dreaming; the classic Spanish melodies playing softly overhead convinced me of it. The atmosphere is eclectic and comforting, sensuous and distinguished without being pretentious. You can pick one of the many comfy leather couches inside to post up on or get lost in the beauty of the outside patio. I decided to sit at the inside bar. I was promptly greeted with a smile and quirky comment from Mike, the bartender. High-five to him, he was AWESOME. He was incredibly knowledgeable, attentive while not being over whelming, and he made me laugh. I ordered the Old June, a cocktail crafted from Tru Gin, St. Germain, fresh lemons and cucumbers. It was smooth, modest in sweetness, and looked fabulous in my "Miami Beet" OPI manicured hand!

For food I tried the Korean Belly pizza. I honestly let a little bit of a gasp out when I bit into this delicious creation. The crust is thin, but won't fall apart on you, and has a perfect crunch that lasts. It's topped with mozzarella cheese, heirloom tomatoes that chef Rishi Singh gets from local markets, smoked pork belly, a gochujang BBQ sauce (a savory Korean condiment made from red chili, glutinous rice, fermented soybeans and salt—it's heaven y'all) and topped with toasted cashews. I also tried the Jalapeno Smoked Humus that I ended up scraping off the plate with my fingers because it was so addicting.

There is no time that's better than another to go to Boheme Café. Whether its 4 p.m. on a Tuesday for a little Happy Hour action, 1 p.m. on a Saturday for a coffee and patio lounging, or for late night shenanigans, you will always find what you are looking for. I know I always do. That is why, while I am still discovering what Houston has to offer, Boheme Café and Wine Bar has been crowned my "Safe Haven".
