Shrimp & Grits On My Mind

Do you ever have those times when a particular dish or meal gets stuck in your head and you become fixated on it? For me it happens more often than I would like to admit; come to think of it that happens with clothes and places too! For the last few months it has been a number of things, but last month it was Shrimp and Grits. I tried so hard to just get over it and go with the flow; even going to a restaurant to try their shrimp and grits but opting for something else on the menu!  Even though my efforts were good, I just could not seem to shake it.

During a recent trip to Dallas I surrendered to the call of the shrimp and grits. My spot of choice was Screen Door Restaurant, located in the Dallas Art District. It was the perfect place to get my meal since they are known as a modern southern kitchen; serving up their take on classic southern dishes. One look at the menu had me wishing I had two more people with me, so I could try a few more things. But we all know I stopped for one reason only, and damn it I was not leaving without getting my shrimp and grits. Folks all I could say was "DAMN, DAMN, DAMN" (those that watched or watch the reruns of Good Times will totally get the Florida Evans quote I just dropped)! That is how good they were; at a point I think my eyes even started watering but I managed to hold back the tears. The Low Country Shrimp & Grits (as listed on the menu), had tomato, bacon, garlic, mushrooms, and cream Homestead Gristmill cheese grits. The lunch portion was big enough for two people, or to take home and enjoy seconds. The grits were creamy and cooked perfectly; no runny, flimsy punk ass grits here my friends.

Folks, if you are a fan of this dish or even someone that has been curious and wanting to try it; add Screen Door Restaurant in Dallas to your list.
